From Consultant. DJ barrels work better in warmer Napa Valley than in the cooler regions for making Bordeaux varietal wines. On a scale of 1-5 the DJ come in with a 3. Comparatively, Saury and Remond produce better tasting wines in cooler regions.

Perfect for making Cabernet Sauvignon based wines in San Martin just outside SC Mountains. On a 1-5 scale, this is a 42.

This barrel adds a distinct aroma and taste attribute to red wines. It can overpower mid-body wines. It can be perfect for big-boy wines. Moreover, it seems to be perfect for big Cabernet Sauvignons and Syrahs. A one-year old DJ adds more character than many new barrels. If you want to use only 50% to 60% new oak, this is a barrel to consider.

This remains a very popular barrel for flagship Cabernet Sauvignons made in the Napa Valley.

This is a barrel I like. However, one caution is that it must be used with other barrels or in a mix of 1-2-3 year old. It is a very powerful barrel. Its power comes from the fact that it is one of the last water bent barrels for making Bordeaux style wines.

I like these barrels specifically for Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon.

These are rare expensive barrels in my cellar that make my mountain Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon taste like Insignia. The problem is I cannot afford the tarrif.

These are a barrel to consider for luxury Cabernet Sauvignon, this is a very nice barrel for ultra ripe Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon based wines, not as interesting for Stag's Leap District wines.

I have used with both white and red wines. I do not have a strong association with any particular attribute. Do these barrels let Napa terroir show through, maybe.

We tried these barrels with Merlot and Cabernet wines up through 1998 vintage and we did not like the barrles planky ot woody attribute. They were bad enough that we did not order them again at the Hogue.

These are great barrels if you look at the winemakers using the barrels. by example Mike Elliot, Sales Rep. for Barrel Associates says they are used by Joseph Phelps Vineyards to make Cabernet Sauvignon wines. He recommends the thin staved DJ barrels. I have no opinion.
