What does Enologix do?
Enologix offers quality metrics, software tools and consulting which allow wineries to protect wine quality and to manage national critics ratings. A one-year service agreement includes analysis, information technology (IT) and consulting viticulture and enology.
Who developed Enologix?
As with any great discovery it was a team effort between winemakers and faculty. Winemaker, Leo McCloskey created the idea of quality recognition software in 1989. He tapped fragrance expert Dr. Susanne Arrhenius to help with color, flavor and fragrance analyses. Dr. Marshall Sylvan, then head of the Department of Mathematics at University of California Santa Cruz, helped with statistical models. Between 1989 and 1992 a dozen winemakers such as, Dick Graff, Chalone Wine Group, and Paul Draper at Ridge Vineyard adopted the system for their winemaking. The result was an average 5-point rise in national critics’ ratings. In 1993 McCloskey launched today’s Enologix, see Wired, November, 2001 for the complete story.
What is Enologix today?
Enologix is the standard quality metric for the California wine industry. Enologix by creating the first standard format protected by the US Patent Office was able to create an information system that relates data between 1990 and 2002.
What is WineFAX?
WineFAX is the standard information format created in 1993, by McCloskey working with data warehouse companies in the Silicon Valley. Every WineFAX™ report contains nine (9) metrics. Included are: 3 market metrics (style, quality, aging potential) and 6 flavors.
What is the software?
Enologix quality recognition software is called QMS™. It is a turn-key Filemaker Pro database application which can be accessed through the Filemaker Client-Server model or a browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer.
QMS is rapidly becoming the product of choice with over 35,000 grape and wine records as of July 31, 2001.
It includes blending tools that forecast quality (allowing for earlier and better blending decision making); provides the capability to identify high and low quality lots earlier than traditional sensory evaluation methods allow; contains a powerful viticultural and winemaking data warehouse; and includes user-friendly statistical modeling that helps you determine the precise impacts of your standard operating procedures (such as viticultural practices, equipment usage, fermentation and maceration strategies, treatments, additions, winery design, sensory evaluation, etc.) on ultimate quality. Through QMS, a winery can easily manage vast amounts of data impacting every significant activity that affects product quality, positioning, and sales.
Is Technical Support available?
Enologix utilizes a team of viticulturists, winemakers, and wine marketers who help clients maximize their usage of QMS and assist with product development. From the vineyard, through the winery, and on to the consumer, Enologix can provide support every step of the way.

 | | | | Our Creed
"Someone coming from 1850 in Bordeaux would recognize what we are doing."—Paul Draper, Winemaker. Ridge Vineyards talking about our creed In Wired, Novermber 2001.
1. Winemaking is an art, not a science.
2. Fine wines are born in ecosystems.
3. Mass produced wines are manufactured by systems.
4. Distinct regional wines is the first goal.
5. Quality is our final metric, no other makes sense.
6. Regional winemakers know local quality.
7. If it doesn't taste good it doesn't leave the cellar.
8. Know how to blend art and commerce.
9. Marketplace performance is our measure of excellence.
10. Keep in touch. Consumers define a well-made wine.

 | | | | Building A Winery
It is important to have a strategic partner. What we have in the California wine industry is a quality movement based on traditional methods imported from Europe. In Napa Valley we have the example of the benefits of adopting traditional recipies. Enologix is an essential part of the infrastructure of Napa companies. We know how to scale fine winemaking, we make wine everyday.—Leo McCloskey, Enologix President
Knowing And Making Wines Around The World
Winemakers' goals change around the world based on what drives a regions profits. Australians make the world's high-value consumer wines. Down-under low cost is more important than any other single factor. The French wine farmers are making the benchmarks by which we all judge luxury wines. In the Haut-Medoc, where we have worked, the goal is to increase quality to an A.O.C. classification to protect high prices.
California winemakers make both consumer and luxury wines. Enologix is California's partner building luxury brands with a trailing average in high quality, price and volume. How do we do it? We have analysis, technology and winemaking secrets. We know California wines and winemaking better than any other company or institution. Moreover we have solved winemakers’ problems from Washington’s Columbia River Basin to California’s Santa Ynez Valley. When you become an Enologix client we will tell you what we know about your wine and California winemaking.
Start With Your Bottled Wines.
Our strategy is to increase quality by changing traditional winemaking operations as they occur using information technology. We call it the Quality Management System--QMS™. At the center of our QMS is a report we call WineFAX. It is the standard for fine winemakers. It can do the impossible, help you to predict quality in the fermenter in terms of market performance. All you have to do is give us your grapes or wines. We do the rest. Analyzing your wines' color, flavor or fragrance to determine style, quality and aging potential. We show you how your quality is driving your performance.
Now you are ready to make wine. We will analyze your wines throughout blending, bottling and aging to help you leave the recipes behind in pursuit of the highest quality.
Our Consultants and Agents..
Once you have Enologix you have to have an InfoGuru who knows the methods of the French wine-farm. That is an authorized Enologix viticulurist or winemaker. Enologix has both in-house and independent winemakers or viticulturists. Unlike any others, our agents are wine InfoGurus, paid for what they know about trends among over 40,000 samples in the world’s major winegrowing regions, or for applying what Enologix knows about winemaking to specific wines. People “pick our brains” and “get inside our heads" to learn how they can improve their wines.
Illustrating our knowledge.
In Bordeaux the winemakers mission is to make a wine that protects the reputation. In one example a First Growth Bordeaux Chateaux assayed wines with Enologix, shipping samples to us during the vintage. The agent on assignment had seen all of the information for First through Fifth Growths for the period of 1979 to date. During the harvest Enologix agent was able to say with certainty, “1991 is a poor year, stylistically similar to 1985 or 1987. And Chateaux X should beware of bottling too much wine.” Alerted, the Chateau lowered its expectation by Christmas, and made a tighter selection, discarding lots with low quality. That same consultant then worked with a flagship Cabernet Sauvignon producer in the Napa Valley to find Bordeaux benchmarks by which to judge Napa Valley fermentations.
Through consulting and beyond, we can assist you in determining the optimum price for your wine in the current marketplace. And through analysis, advise you as to which wines you should submit to which critics to maximize your chances for that 90 point score.

What is the Enologix Q5-Index™?
We offer the technical comparison of quality over time in the Q5-Index.
Enologix has tracked wine quality since 1989 using exactly the same metrics in a standard report. This allows us to benchmark today’s wines.
Enologix Q5-Index is the average quality (Index column in the WineFAX) compared to recent “90-point vintages”. It is calculated by searching our database by time segments. We typically assess vintages by assessing wines assayed between September 1st and October 16th each year. The average style, quality, or aging potential are divided by the 5-year highs. This year we divided Cabernet Sauvignon by the 1997 vintage. Similarly, we divided Pinot Noir by the 1999 vintage.
